Another season of biking is here, and I am proud to share I will be representingDirtyJane. At the start of something new, I always set goals for myself. Last year, becoming a Jane was a goal! I applied at the end of summer 2013, and luckily, they held my application until the next round of Jane applications was being accepted!

Therefore, it is no surprise that my work area at home is quickly becoming a list of “to-do’s” and goals for the remainder of this year! My desk is littered with sticky notes. I love it...There is something comforting and fulfilling in checking off a list, achieving; which is a decent segue to my riding goals.

My sticky note goal back in April was to grow my skills and confidence as a rider, particularly in the discipline of downhill riding and racing. For many seasons, I “maybe” would race or “maybe” would try that certain black diamond run or jump which scared me. So, when Mountain Creek opened their lifts the first weekend of May, I made sure I was there. Exhilarating. Empowered. Unrestrained. Anxious. These are just a few adjectives to describe what it feels to ride downhill again after a very long winter off of my downhill bike, all the while haphazardly riding my cross country bike through the snow and ice that frequently pummeled the Mid- Atlantic region where I reside.

After my first couple of runs at Mountain Creek on May 5th, I immediately set some of my goals for the season:

  • I am going to (this is NOT a maybe) race at least 3 times, and my very first downhill race ever will be at my home turf, Mountain Creek on Sunday, June 8th.

  • I need to (not maybe) gain more confidence, and clear a few troublesome areas and cobwebs out of my head. I had a few bad crashes last year that have rattled my confidence.

  • I need to focus (seriously, not maybe) on more training in order to sustain a stronger pace while riding.

I know that these goals are somewhat loose and lofty now, but I am hoping that my adage for this season, “Don’t say maybe, just do it” helps me to add more sticky notes with varying goals, and check off a few lingering goals from older lists. I know that simply talking about it in an open forum has already made my goals a reality I can strive toward. I am not going to Maybe do it- I WILL do what I set out to accomplish!

As you move into something new, on or off the bike, how do you find ways to overcome inadequacy, fear, or old cobwebs that still haunt YOU? Remember, dirtyjane loves you <3
