It makes sense on many levels. Apparently, it's just a bit over your head.

eBikes are the new roller blades. Which makes this an even bigger bummer

These stupid Mo-peds (that's what they are) are hurting trail access for ALL mtb'er's.

Unless you're disabled or over 75 years old, get your fat ass in shape, learn to ride, and pedal, suffer, push to the top. If you're one of those, "they're so fun! you don't get it!" Then man up and ride a dirtbike.

Does it have a motor? Is it a 'cycle"? Then?...

Unless you're disabled or over 70 yrs old, stop being a lazy fat-ass and pedal a bike without a motor on non-motorized trails. If you want a motor, get a dirtbike. I do both. Both are mega-fun. But let's not jeopardize trail access of MTB by riding MOTORCYCLES on trails with hikers, runners, old people, dogs, blah, blah.

Buy a dirtbike. Ride it on the track or trail. They're super fun to climb! Ride your MTB on MTB non-motorized trails.

The problem is they're GONNA HURT TRAIL ACCESS FOR MOUNTAINBIKING!

You're probably right in that e-bikes will get cheaper and better and than way more people will ride e-MTB. And we will lose trail access and be denied it on future trails because now we're all riding electric pedal assisted motorcycles (that's what they are!!!) on what are intended to be non-motorized trails with hikers and dogs and old people.

MTB is already the Bad Guy of user groups and once there is 5x the traffic (more users cause it's much easier and ability to cover 4x as much ground per ride) we'll just lose access. The parks aren't going to decern between motorized and non-motorized; they'll just give MTB's the boot all together.

The problem is they will hurt trail access. I've seen plenty of e-bikers out on the trails that WILL hurt themselves and/or others because the barrier of MTB being hard (to get to the top at least and cover ground) is almost non-existent with an e-bike. They have no clue what they're doing out there. More hikers getting run over, more inexperienced 'e-riders' getting hurt on the way down, more EMS runs to extract injured people off the trail.

MTB being difficult means that only the people that really want to do it and are willing to pay the dues will get out there. This filters out the the people that probably shouldn't be out there, don't know what they're doing, and are a big threat to MTB access, especially on future trails.

I get the injury thing like with Paul or others that are disabled. This is a positive with e-bikes. But let's face it: that's not why most people buy e-bikes.

Have done Whistler for a few days straight. And many other places. Riding as well as racing in the big boy's class. And motocross, and mega-hell off-road moto stuff .... again, fancy bars won't remedy your arm pump. Good technique will. Those braking bumps are nothing but a small annoyance if you know what's up and do it right.

Correct technique is the only thing that will take care of arm pump. Sure every little bit may help .... But investing in knowing how to ride will be money better spent.

There's already a sport for that: Real enduro. Dirt bikes. Of course the above would be fun, but MTB's are gonna be kicked of many trails in a heartbeat if that becomes the new norm. Think about it.

Except for the part where MTB's aren't allowed on many trails in the future because of way way more bike traffic. Also, the barrier for entry will be virtually gone. Real MTB is hard...that's why a lot of people don't do it. But now a lot of people will be out there that don't care and/or are unaware about trail ediquette, running over hikers, old ladies, dogs, etc.

We'll just have to go farther and farther out to ride MTB.... And we already have dirt bikes for that.

Oh, and I bet those up-hill climbs and liaison sections will be real exciting!!! Gimme a break. This is about money and it will hurt the sport in the end.

The UCI has done many very questionable things in the past but this takes the cake.

Great. I get it. I'd love to ride with loved one's, too. But, instead, we do things that ALL of us can do--things that are important to them. Like just hanging out, hiking, taking a walk, going to breakfast. Not everybody needs to ride mountain bikes.........This video is not relevant to the big picture, what e-bikes will do to the sport and future trail access......Regarding the vid: sorry, dudes, go ride DH w a lift, or go ride dirtbikes with he Old Man ... Pulling on heart strings in the name of E-bikes is, frankly, irresponsible and destructive. It doesn't help that you make money of the E-bikes you're pushing........Vital, YOU ARE selling out the sport. That's it. This is a terrible direction to go. None of us got into this to make a lot of money. If that's your goal, get out of bikes and go do that. Otherwise, please, have some dignity and balls and stand up for non-motorized BICYCLES on trails before we all get the boot. Electric motorcycles (thats' what they are--fun as they may be) are going to cause big problems, soon. Pull your head out. (For the record, I love and ride motocross a ton. Not against motors and burning gas--just way against MTB trail closures)

How can people not see that?

Awesome! This will make the climbs so much more exciting!

Here's an idea, UCI: no electronics in sanctioned racing. No e-shifters. No data acquisition. And definitely no F'ing E-BIKES. No radio communication with rider. (cameras, GPS, power meters, all fine; just not electronics aiding the bike)... That would be a ballsy move and level the playing field, keep costs down ... kinda like the production rule in pro motocross (which kinda works?). But, clearly, the UCI is after that $krilla, so something like that -- you know, preserve the sport by trying to ASSURE FUTURE TRAIL ACCESS!!! -- will never happen.

This could possibly be the worse thing ever for future trail access.

Added a comment about video Does It Even Matter That He's on an E-Bike? 12/28/2018 10:08 AM

Lame......... If you're gonna ride an e-bike anywhere where MOTORcycles are allowed, cool, go for it (or just ride a real dirtbike?). E-bikes probably do have a place (and they are fun!)....... But, they're gonna F things up for all MTB'ers on any trails that are currently designated non-motorized, see heavy traffic from other users, etc., as well as limiting future access pretty much anywhere it is regulated (pretty much anywhere at all close to an urban setting). As MTB'ers, we shoulda self-policed this; almost all parks and rec folks don't know and don't care about the diff in e-bikes and reg MTBs--and especially won't in few years when batteries are super light and cheap enough that everyone will be on them and covering 300% more ground per ride, as well as allowing a bunch of idiots access that they normally wouldn't have had because it was too much work--the parks-folk will just deny access to ALL MTBs. Cool, vid, Vital.......wish you wouldn't pump this up. Limited access isn't going to help anyone in the sport, and, unfortunately, it looks like it's going in that direction. Kids: pedal your mountain bike. Then go buy a motocross (or trail) bike for your grip twisting fix! Both awesome, but two different sports for two diff places....
