I've tried a number of different shock configurations on a number of different bikes. The idea that the Super Deluxe is somehow a bad air shock is a bit of a misnomer. What the Super Deluxe does lack is the tunability of a Float X2, but in outright performance, I'd say its right up there with the best of them.

...but don't listen to me. A number of RockShox athletes have won a whole bunch of WC/EWS races on the (air) shock (eg: Hill, Pierron, Moir)

Obviously on the coil front, you've got Loris, Reece, Brosnon etc - Dcamp can chime in but I'm pretty sure the damper is the same between the coil & air shocks with the spring being the (obvious) difference. My big point here is it has world class winning pedigree engineered into the shock.

From my many of hours of testing, I feel strongly that RockShox has the coolest air spring technology. Offering a huge range of adjustment, to both the positive and negative (via megneg) spring.

As to why the bike was harsh, I'd guess maybe they've overdone it with volume spacers (the bike is far more progressive than Sentinel V1.0 days). This is a double edged sword, of course. It'll help the bike feel more poppy and responsive (which they note it is) at the expense of square edged hits.

If I owned a Spire and felt this was a problem I'd do two things before spurring (no pun intended) for a different shock.

1) Pull all volume spacers out of the Super Deluxe. Set sag at 28-30% (slightly higher - giving more avail travel) and go smash.

2) Do a chainless run. Maybe pedal kickback is part of the problem. If this feels a lot better, add O-Chain - go ride happy.

Currently on a Spitfire V3 and am blown away at how capable the KS2 system is. Even as a 135mm travel 27.5" bike it carries insane speed and can hang with much 'bigger' bikes. Next build will def be the Titan mixed wheel.

Suppose that would have been good to include. Checked for any kinks in the housing, hanger alignment, cable tension, b tension, high and low limits after noticing the issue on the first ride. Cable drag seemed like the most probable cause since it primarily happened while shifting to the high gears/releasing cable tension.

One more thing to add here...

If you ever find a bike that you feel is effortless to weight properly, EG: you feel like you aren't moving fore/aft a lot to keep weight where you want, throw it on the scales. Write down the weight on the front, weight on the back.

Now look at the bike's front center and compare it to the rear center.

Front center is a much better gauge of how you will actually weight the bike being HA & offset is included in that number. Reach alone doesn't include these two massively important variables. When buying future bikes try and keep all this close (proportions).

To be honest, I'd like to see "mountain bike fitting" with weighting being the big data point. Lots of testing would need to be undertaken to figure out what *actually* works, for who and how it varies discipline to discipline. From there you could take certain inputs - like the kind of terrain a rider finds themselves in, if they race, skill level, arm length, torso length, inseam length etc. etc. and better fit someone on a bike or better steer them to a bike that will handle for their desires. Especially important now that bikes are all "pretty damn good" with the big difference between them little things with respect to fit.

Until we get fully adjustable chainstays, (or if we ever do) it'll be hard to play with balance too much. Really all we've got is cleat position, stem, offset (to some extent), stack/rise and some wiggle room on suspension. Obviously, a lot of these impact other riding & fit characteristics too.

It's almost like they're completely different companies with marketing tailored to different audiences and price brackets. Weird.

that's up to pivot to start their models at 6k and you don't have to like that. the $6k bikes from gt and pivot are of similar value, however, even though a cheaper option is not offered by pivot. SLX performs fantastically. fox performance and PE suspension is solid, too. the pivot seems to have nicer wheels than the GT. pivots are full carbon frames, gt has alloy rear ends (which helps offset some of the the tax of pivot's X01 price at $700 more, which i agree, is tough to swallow). it all evens out IMO which is why i called them "extremely comparable".

GT should relabel it as "strap on compatible"
