Sharp-looking ride! I wonder if there's just that much more material in the frame with Pivot's size-specific layup? Thanks for chiming in and sharing.

By and large, yes, all the other bikes fared better in this one arena. It's a really challenging trade-off because the other side of this coin is such a fun ride. At the other extreme was the Spartan HP which paves trails but isn't so much a lively bike.

Nice! Even though we didn't agree on everything, there's no doubt the Firebird can send. Sounds like you have two components that we pointed out as this bike needing: shorter stem and wider bars. cool

I'd be curious what other ways your bike is set up such that it weighs so much more than our coil build?

Maybe you missed the part where Ryan said he would buy the Spire?

In the end, it isn't about what bike our testers favored most. It is about the areas where each bike excels and how that may speak to our readers.

I've held off for so long on making a stance with the mixed wheel thing, I really wanted to ride a number of bikes before drawing any conclusions. But, here it (kind of) goes - if you're looking for a larger wheel experience like what 29ers offer but are not of large stature, the mixed-wheel is all it's cracked up to be.

Rear shock performance is tough. Using this test as a model, the bike is just as important as the shock unit.

In the case of the Spartan, I rode the 38 with two diff cartridges (Grip and Grip2) and did notice a slight improvement in small and mid bump compliance. If the budget up front is tight, grab Performance now and buy a damper later?

It absolutely does, which is sick! The jump in the photo of this article is about 25+ feet long and takes some serious wind-up to hit. Our testers didn't have an issue at all. Same goes for some of the drops we got into. While the Gnarvana is somewhat linear, it won't rob you completely of pop or bottom out harshly.

I've tried a number of different shock configurations on a number of different bikes. The idea that the Super Deluxe is somehow a bad air shock is a bit of a misnomer. What the Super Deluxe does lack is the tunability of a Float X2, but in outright performance, I'd say its right up there with the best...more

Of the shocks that have come through our testing offices this past year, few have been as impressive as that DHX2 coil. No doubt it would make the Spire a more supple rig.

The 38 is every bit as good as the Zeb, and vice versa. It's purely subjective with those two. It just merited mentioned the preference of our crew.

Currently on a Spitfire V3 and am blown away at how capable the KS2 system is. Even as a 135mm travel 27.5" bike it carries insane speed and can hang with much 'bigger' bikes. Next build will def be the Titan mixed wheel.

Funny you mention the bars on the Orbea. Two of our testers found them too stiff and would ditch them. The Orbea also has alloy wheels, not carbon. Lastly, the Zeb is an amazing fork and again, preferable to some in the crew.

The only bike with the carbon bar/wheels/cranks/38 combo is the Banshee.

We'd still peg the Spire as an all-rounder as-is. It was right in the mix for sure. Perhaps comparing it to the Sentinal is more accurate. Riders wanting to get out there all day but find the Sentinal a little short in the legs will be pumped on the Spire.
