Wetter Is Better for Red Bull Rampage Course Build

In most mountain bike communities, ‘rain’ is a dirty word, but in the exclusive world of Red Bull Rampage competitors, rain can be a glorious thing — still dirty, just in a good way.

On Saturday afternoon one of southern Utah’s infamous sudden storms rolled over the Rampage course and sent build teams packing — the six-mile dirt road into the venue becomes impassable with too much moisture — but when the sun came out on Sunday the diggers were ecstatic.

“Usually you’re working with super dry, dusty conditions, where the dirt’s just sloughing away,” says Kyle Norbraten in the video above. “Now that we have the moisture you can pack it a lot harder… You can mold it. It hardens up real nice once it dries.”

Water doesn't stick around very long in the desert, though. By midday Sunday the course was already getting dusty again, and dig crews were hustling to get lips packed properly and landings filled in. With limited time to ride before qualifiers on Friday, every minute of digging is of paramount importance.

“We’ve been here for four days now and haven’t ridden yet,” says Brett Rheeder. “The goal is to finish the line and start to have fun on it.”

Find out how everyone's lines turn out by watching the webcast of finals on Sunday, September 28 starting at 1:00 p.m. MT on the official Red Bull Rampage site, as well as Red Bull TV.
