New Angle of Aaron Gwin's World Champs Crash 19
We've already seen footage of Gwin's trip to the safety net in Leogang during World Champs, but this is a new angle. The official explanation pointed to faulty brakes. This new footage certainly seems consistent with going down a hill a little bit too fast...

came in too hot off the drop, nose cased the landing. in an attempt to prevent being bucked, he hangs off the back. front looses traction and no doubt with some help from the odd root, and cheers for directionality.
just saying it's a proto means jack, because proto in this sense means it's race ready through and through. it doesnt mean it come fresh off the engineers pencil. Please ppl. context. Proto means not for sale yet. Besides, he ran these suckers endlessly in practice.
Both brakes at exactly the same time? hmm, right.

"came in too hot of the drop." Yes, because his brakes failed. You can see his hands go straight to the bars when he reached for them in the other angle. Gwin has crashed before in his race run (Val d'Isere I believe) and doesn't blame it on his bike. Why would shimano have people thinking that their brakes fail if it was in actuality just rider error?

errm, shimano never copped to the brake failure: that was all TWR. Will be interesting to see what Shimano actually says when they actually comment, which they haven't other than to say they will be investigating.

Totally agree with ya Dan255 !
Gwin's a fast guy, not a kamikaze guy, and the way he's going thru this drop's not the way he would've done with operational brakes !!!

My guess is that maybe this was just after he realised they failed. The section before this doesn't really require much braking so it could have taken the time until he hit this bit to realise they'd failed. Then, obviously he couldn't slow down so hit the netting.

For the people who think that his brakes were somehow rigged to fail, don't you think they would do something that wouldn't potentially kill him? Maybe a cut link in the chain? This is why his brakes are prototypes and not in production. Nothing fishy here, except a defect in design.

Anyone who thinks that the brakes failing was a bullshit story obviously has never had a brake fail on them. My back brake failed a few years ago and i kept riding it and you lose nearly all control and cant slow down for anything. It's actually really scary. Why shouldn't you believe Gwin?

so you obviously had both brakes at exactly the same time then? becuase one brake is exactly the same as both at once. the speed of the crash doesnt say anything - he was racing for the world champs, pf course he was going fast. if he came into that a little bit hot he would have been doomed, theres no way you could slow down on something that steep

The organizers aced it putting netting in that spot. Gwin would still be falling down that mountainside if they didn't.

I know the brake thing sounds fishy but watching the video he does simply just look completely out of control there. Its just very hard to imagine a guy like Gwin would just mess up that badly and come in that fast. I mean he wasnt even close to being able to make that turn at that speed.

Yeah just blame it on the brakes and puss it down the hill cos you know you cant win!

He's showing a lot of potential these days though. I think one day he might win a race against the guys that show up to worlds.

Gwin shows no mercy towards that safety fence.
