We had three riders along for the trip; Aimee Dix an ex-World Cup downhill racer, Anthony O’Boyle an ex- World Cup XC racer and Joe Taylor the local legend. 2013 is the first year that the racers have had the opportunity to take part in the Mega Avalanche. The race has a mythical status within the mountain biking community and the riders couldn’t wait to get involved. We arrived earlier in the week to give the riders time to learn both the qualifying and main race track. One thing that you really can’t comprehend is the distance you have to travel, we are talking 25 minutes on average for the qualifying track and 55 minutes for the main Mega Avalanche track.
Before we knew it, it was time for qualifying, Aimee put in a solid ride and placed 14th giving her a front row position for the main event. Both Anthony and Joe also had a really good ride getting themselves top ten finishes in their heats to give them a reasonably good starting position for the main event on the Sunday.
Aimee was first up to take on the Mega Avalanche. She found her flow and pushed hard right the way to finish line, she placed high with 12th position! The guys also put in a strong ride with Joe getting 93rd place with a serious mechanical leaving him with only his hardest gear shortly after the first section. Anthony battled his way into 103rd place after having a few unforgiving crashes. The overall experience was ace and the team are really keen to head back next year and improve on their results.
