Dirt's Steve Jones asks Aaron Gwin and some of the Specialized crew exactly what led Aaron to jump on a size L Demo one day before qualifying, and how that has worked out (spoiler: Aaron got second - that should tell you something).

I just want to say how awesome it was to be like a fly on the wall as Steve talked to Jason about the sizes etc. It might be the bike nerd coming out of me, but those are the convo's that I love to hear with the people directly involved with the design of the bike. Not a bunch of hot air with nothing to back it. Intelligence and bike knowledge at its best!

Other riders go to New Zealand to train - it's summer there over Dec/Jan/Feb - just sayin'...
6/16/2013 9:31 AM
Guys, just to clear all you up, he said nothing rough or WC level IN THE OFF SEASON (winter) and @kochjg I agree with you; however, all those places are closed during the winter and he can't ride there. I give the guy props for saying what's on his mind and he'll be in for a surprise at nationals on that Angelfire track!
6/15/2013 7:36 PM
I agree, people can say what they will everyrider out there thinks they know where the gnar is.....truth is unless you have been to a European world cup you cannot comprehend how steep and rough it really is....did they slack off maybe, but even the likes of Steve Pete said Val di sole was one of the gnarliest tracks hes ever raced..whats he know hes only been around 20 years racing world cups...I just think its funny how everyone just thows Gwin under the bus because he didnt slaughter everyone
6/15/2013 7:39 PM
And yes there is plenty o gnar in the US just not on the same page though.
6/15/2013 5:42 PM
So what I'm hearing is Aaron and his team didn't do the off season homework that they should have. Sounds like they are close now but man, there is plenty of rough riding in the US. If you are a WC team with last years top dog you travel to the terrain dang it. Its like deciding not to study until you fail the first test of the semester.
6/15/2013 6:42 PM
Seriously! No rough tracks/trails in the US?!? Are you fucking kidding me? That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Maybe not in January, but in the spring, there is, um, Windham? MSA a few hours north in Canada? Whistler? Trestle in CO? Mt Snow? Angelfire? Oregon? Platty? I don't know, I call BS. The bottom line is they thought the medium was right, but they were wrong, and they should have done more due diligence

I want to know more about his grip compound preferences, as well as his choice in saddle. I think those are far more important features on a downhill bicycle.
6/15/2013 12:13 PM
So,the country that invented the sport and makes the best bikes hasn't got world cup-level tracks.
What do you guys want those mountains for?
6/15/2013 12:57 PM
Fugitives and out-casts need somewhere to hide. Oh, and for hikers, too.
Remember - we merely invented the sport. Other nations perfected it.
6/15/2013 1:19 PM
Isn't he sponsored by Mammoth Mtn.? They can't be real happy right now. There's plenty of steeps and rocks there. There's also a secret track that Brad knows that's world cup steep and rocky, at least in places.
6/15/2013 11:49 AM
brad's hair looks sooooo good!
6/15/2013 12:58 PM
No tracks like that in the US, Perhaps Gwin should come to Washington and hit Thrillium with us! Get outta Cali Aaron and ride some big tracks this winter here in the US

6/15/2013 11:35 AM
Now he's on a bike that's too big for him! Give him 445mm chainstays/rear centre Specialized. He'll go down 50/100lb in rear springrate and I bet $100 he would destroy straightaway.
6/17/2013 10:52 AM
still need to corner. 445mm stays are way too long. GT and Devinci are around 430.
6/15/2013 11:32 AM
This should put an end to all the e-spec going on...right?
6/15/2013 12:22 PM
6/15/2013 12:37 PM
Thank God! 'Cuz nobody has even tapped into the tire-pressure "issue".
