First Look: 2013 Five Ten Freerider VXi and Dirtbag Shoes
Five Ten is introducing a few new shoes at Outdoor Retailer this weekend, and they've been teasing us with some photos on their facebook page. First up, the 2013 Freerider VXi:

Reading the placards beneath the shoe, the big change is "the new Stealth Contact outsole that allows you to pull, push, and adjust," things that weren't always easy with the previous sole pattern.

The Google machine led us to this video from Vertical Playground, where you can see the new sole in detail (screenshot above). Five Ten's Stealth Rubber is pretty malleable stuff, so the use of smooth portions on the sole might actually work well. There's also a knurled pattern on the toe which will likely grip nicely when hiking back up for another run. We'll shoot to bring you guys a review sometime in the next few months. Retail pricing is set at $120.

Also new for 2013 is the Dirtbag, a super casual riding shoe at an affordable price. It'll be available in the grey shown here and a brown as well.
Availability looks to be sometime in Spring 2013.

They had the Dirtbag at Windham. Only issue was that the crew staffing the 5.10 booth didnt really know shit about it. I held it. The smooth sole was tackey as expected but smooth and slick at the same time. My immediate thought was "I don't know." We'll have to wait and see.

I've considered gluing a 40-60A duro rubber tread to the bottom of my shoes to be even grippier than FiveTen's stealth rubber (which I believe have more like a 70-80A durometer), but after looking at 5.10 and rock climbing history, it seems people have beat me to that idea. :D
Anyone here enjoy combining mtn biking with rock climbing?

Some of my earlier mountain biking was riding up the Star Wars trail in UCSC to get to the bridges with rocks glued on for holds.

Did they show the Kestrel at all? Impatiently awaiting its release.
