#ThrowbackThursday - No Brakes, No Problem! Early Mammoth Kamikaze Action - bturman - Mountain Biking Pictures - Vital MTB

Would you believe it? What began in 1985 eventually evolved into the sport we call downhill today. Hockey lids, rigid bikes and cantilever brakes... We can't even imagine trying to stop! In case you didn't know, the Kamikaze Games are returning to Mammoth Mountain this September. Bonus points to anyone that shows up on a bike and gear from the same era in which it began.

Here is one rider who can't wait to hit the Mammoth race weekend at the end of the summer this year!

Such a fun race (although one killer flat section near the bottom)! They need to hold it again just to mix things up.

Yes, you can do downhill without suspension or disc brakes. It's the Indian, not the arrow. At one time an unknown in a pair of BluBlockers could walk on and nearly win... full video at Awesomewheelie.com

It's refreshing to see a mtb film without slow-mos and people tucking their ears inside hats.

I guess the biggest progress, besides the suspension ofcourse, was made with the tires...

I want to see this race, but with all the new technology and current crop of blasters. How do you think it'd stack up?
