When Brett Rheeder threw down the holy grail of slopestyle runs in the early stages of the 2014 Crankworx Red Bull Joyride, all attention turned to Brandon Semenuk to see if he could answer the call. The elusive rider has remained relatively out of sight compared to years past. Any insight into his riding, life or training, has been on his terms, via his Life Behind Bars web series. The young Canadian didn't have the same hype around him coming into Joyride this year and that may have made all the difference. When he rolled around the start bridge, no one knew if he'd have an arsenal of tricks to create a run that could match Rheeder's. Then he cracked a backflip one-foot-can-can off that first flat drop and every slopestyle rider shit themselves because their lives would never be the same. Semenuk didn't stop there. He ran his usual tech no-hander, barspin and whip trickery (flip double whip on the 3rd jump!) and threw a corked 7 on the same jump as Rheeder. OK, Semenuk, you have our attention! He kept things consistent until the house feature where he footplant 360'd off the 20 foot drop - creative and crazy all in one. He approached the finish jump, his nemesis. If Semenuk crashed on the finish jump, it'd be Rheeder's, if he didn't crash, who knows. Semenuk didn't crash and after a tuck no-hander into the dish, he altered the earth's rotation by spinning a corked 720 to a buttery-smooth, bolts landing. The judges rewarded Semenuk with the highest score and the rest is history as Rheeder over-cooked it and crashed on his 2nd run. It was a slopestyle for the ages and Semenuk proved he's still top dog on the ramps and drops. Hit "Next" and enjoy the chaos from Joyride!
