Pro Bike Check: Luca Shaw's Specialized Status 2 8

We check in with Luca Shaw at Val di Sole to get a gander at his Specialized Status 2 downhill bike. -Turman

Luca ran the Status last year, and though he could have ridden the SWorks Demo 8, he preferred to run the Status since it was a familiar machine. -Turman

Industry Nine wheels aboard Luca's bike. -Turman

He runs an I9 Enduro rim up front and a I9 Gravity rim out back. -Turman

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. -Turman

A 2014 RockShox BoXXer World Cup was added at Fort William. -Turman

A RockShox Vivid R2C keeps the rear wheel planted. -Turman

The boys at SRAM and RockShox have helped Luca dial in his settings for Fort William and Val di Sole. -Turman

Adding a little height to the cockpit is something Luca has been pleased with. -Turman

Considering how steep the tracks like Val di Sole are, the higher front end helps Luca stay positioned better, avoiding over-the-bars situations. -Turman

Avid X0 Trail brakes offer up plenty of power, even on the brutal World Cup downhill courses. -Turman

203mm rotors, front and rear for the younger Shaw brother. -Turman

Fort William was an eye-opener and increased tire pressure was needed due to the high speeds and big hits. -Turman

While the Status isn't as light as the SWorks Demo, it's plenty light for Luca. -Turman

Truvativ X0 carbon cranks with Crank Brothers Mallet DH pedals. -Turman

SRAM X0 DH rear derailleur. -Turman

When back home on the East Coast, Luca is stoked when he gets to ride Snowshoe Resort. -Turman

Luca and his brother Walker are enjoying their first races on the World Cup circuit and have a long career ahead of them. -Turman

Luca finished a solid 7th place in the stacked Junior field at Fort William, his first World Cup race ever. After this interview, he went on to place 3rd at Val di Sole, one of the most challenging tracks on the entire circuit. Keep an eye on Luca, it's only up from here! [Snap by Sven] -Turman

Luca Shaw just has two World Cup races under his belt and he's finished 7th and 3rd in the Junior class. We caught up with the American pinner at Val di Sole before his 3rd place run to get a run down of his Specialized Status 2 DH bike.

It's awesome to see good kids doing well on relatively affordable bike platforms. Barrecloth and Soderstrom? rode Status' in the Rampage. They can also be built into a sick mini-DH/All Mountain rippers with the right parts. There are even provisions for an E-type front derailleur! Check out Barrecloth's rig with air shock: http://www.vitalmtb.com/photos/member/Mountain-Bike-Photos-You-Should-See,5205/Darren-Berrecloths-2013-Specialized-Status-Freeride-Bike,51608/sspomer,2

It is cool that he is riding the Status which is itself affordable but I think it also worth noting that the rest of Shaw's specs here are every bit the high end build you'd expect to see on a WC bike. The "high end" status (which is affordable) goes for $3,300 but it has a lower end build. Stuff like FOX VAN RC, Boxxer Race, Elixir Brakes, Decendent Cranks, X7 drivetrain, etc where Shaw is running Boxxer WC, full XO drivetrain and brakes, XO Carbon cranks, I9 Wheels etc. The frame might be a little more affordable but he's still riding a very expensive build.

Been working with the Shaw family for the past couple years, some of the neatest kids i've worked with in 25 years of MTB racing. Top notch, no ego, smart, great kids.

The Shaw brothers are two promising up and comers on and off the track... Awesome to see them get the chance to test their skills against the worlds best this season! Can't wait to see how the season turns out for a number of Carolina juniors on the WC circuit this year.

He was looking extremely stylish alongside all the pros at the Slalom this year, was hoping he would do well overseas. Obviously that's the case...PINNED in that last shot.
