First Look, First Ride: Cane Creek Double Barrel Coil Shock with Climb Switch

View as: Slideshow | One Page
Prefer the linear feel and sensitivity of a coil shock but miss the ability to quickly adjust it for climbs? Enter the Cane Creek Double Barrel Coil CS, an ideal solution for many 150-170mm travel bikes.
Cane Creek's unique Climb Switch (CS) first appeared on their air shocks, and has gained a good following since.
The Climb Switch aids climbing efficiency on-the-fly by adding low-speed compression AND low-speed rebound damping. We test rode the shock on the new 167mm travel Knolly Delirium.
ON. The compression change adds support while the additional rebound helps maintain traction over rough terrain. Traditional systems only add compression.
OFF. In practice it's incredibly easy to use. When you're ready to descend, flipping the CS off returns the shock to your preset compression and rebound settings and it's ready to rip.
While firm, the shock remains active yet controlled while you climb. Locked-out suspension isn't ideal over bumpy terrain.
Want a custom climbing tune? It's possible through a service center. You can also just turn the Climb Switch partially on, which can be useful in some scenarios.
On the trail the shock is just like the incredibly versatile Double Barrel Coil you've come to love on your big rig. It brings better small bump compliance, heat dissipation, and the more linear feel of a coil to your "little" bike. Whistler's bonus lines just got easier.
The Climb Switch is very useful while navigating up rough terrain to access goods like this. We typically dislike bar-mounted climbing levers for the unnecessary complexity and clutter they add, but Cane Creek's Climb Switch is so effective we'd willingly add one to our cockpit.
Cane Creek's DBCoil CS shock is available now for $665 USD without the steel coil spring. Watch for a lightweight spring upgrade in the future.
