Jerome Clementz in a class of his own. Light-footed finessing combined with spontenaity and speed is what it took to win this opening round. After 35-minutes of total racing, the Top 5 were only separated by 24-seconds. -Sven Martin
No stopping @enduro_jc! -Lee Trumpore
Liaison to Stage 2, Jerome Clementz always has time for the media. -Sven Martin
See, most racers went around that lump. Not Anne-Caroline. Shortest is usually fastest if you have the arms and energy. She had both and won the race today. -Sven Martin
Tracy Moseley only 18-seconds off Anne-Caroline after 42-mins of racing. It's going to be another tight season between these two female destroyers. -Sven Martin
Come race day, even the locals had trouble recognizing the original trails. -Lee Trumpore
Cousin to the silverback, the Redbacked gorilla heckler. Someone in an earlier comment asked why they don't cut down the overhanging trees for safety. This is why. -Sven Martin
Fabien Barel applied the pressure on the last few stages, forcing Jerome to push hard on the final stage and risk making a mistake. 2nd on the day and a happy Fab. -Sven Martin
The #spiritofenduro is strong in the Masters household. -Lee Trumpore
Wyn Masters may come across as a bit of a joker, but when it comes down to racing he is always serious. Although he does have a little local advantage, his power and fitness helped him upset some big names with an awesome podium finish. -Sven Martin
Only three riders in the whole field decided to send this 50' table on the finish line straight, and Wyn did it blind because he knew Blenki had done it before him; Mitch did it because he's about that #freeracing lifestyle. #nevergofullenduro #huckingisthenewenduro -Zach Faulkner & @maddogboris

Sam Hill lost heaps of time on a few of the boggier stages, but stormed the final stage down part of the DH track to win by over 4 seconds. 9th overall in his EWS debut = #onthehunt -Lee Trumpore
Sam Hill knows the power of the pre-race power wheelie. -Sven Martin
Cecile Ravanel on the "unrideables" on Stage 6, wisely choosing to race her full face for the whole day. -Sven Martin
The crowd would find the most awkward spots, cheering or heckling in earnest. Richie Rude slides off the bench on the slick roots. He was heckled. -Sven Martin
Damien Oton rides a lot of moto and this is just like outdoors for him. -John Parkin
Another rider who had to pull out after a massive slam. Hard to ride flat out like this on so many stages with so many variables. Yoann Barelli #doyouevenscrubbro -Sven Martin
Kiwi local, Rosara Joseph, fears no slippery Rotorua roots and railed her way into 7th spot. -Lee Trumpore
Dan Atherton setting off from Te Puia’s Pohutu geyser in the heart of Rotorua. A big crash on Stage 5 would end his day, heading to the hospital instead of Stage 6. -Sven Martin
A lot of eyes were on Martin Maes after a few near wins last year. How many teenagers would consider 18th place a disappointment. -Lee Trumpore
Anneke Beerten knows #huckingisthenewenduro -Sven Martin
Chuckle brothers, Neethling and Brendan, get their enduro photography on. #moarfernfilterz -Sven Martin
Brook Macdonald with his take on a tight, slippery corner; slides the back in first and alley-oop-rollbacks her around. Look for the video on Wyn Masters' Facebook. Classic. Stage 1. -Sven Martin
This is Brook from the DH race, but we don't care. The audio from Wyn is worth the sacrifice. YEAH BULLDOG! -Lee Trumpore
There was another race going on in the forest. The 2WD van VS the 4WD pirate truck. Despite a quick pit stop, the pirate truck came out tops #safarishooters @maddogboris
After smashing his banana on Stage 1, Blenki wasn't able to repeat his 3rd place in yesterday's DH. -Lee Trumpore
Nico Lau, monster-trucking the straighest line possible at all times. -Lee Trumpore
Justin Leov, up in your space! -Lee Trumpore
Wyn, about to interview a rider? Riders passed a neutral feed zone twice, able to fuel up on food and water. After two big liaisons, they were well-attended. -Sven Martin
New year, new team, and new kit for Kelli Emmett. Picking up where she left off with as the top North American enduro racer as her team mates discuss the day in the audio. -Lee Trumpore
In conditions similar to his native Maine, Adam Craig loved the 'awkwardness' of the Rotorua trails and started his season off wth a strong 13th place. -Lee Trumpore
Joe Barnes on tricky Stage 5. Fast and treacherous. -Sven Martin
Lars Sternberg, 45mph today and 3 speeding tickets later. -Sven Martin
Curtis Keene has had better days. Multiple crashes and eventually a DNS on Stage 7. -Lee Trumpore
2nd place in the team championships last year, Isabeau and her teammates don't seem to have lost any of their pace in the offseason. -Lee Trumpore
Everyone loves an underdog. Meggie Bichard from Nelson, New Zealand, has been quietly creeping further up the field in each race she enters. A 5th place is a great start to her first planned full season of EWS. -Sven Martin
Delorme's has always been bigger and more capable than Seager's. #docking -Sven Martin
More roots than dirt. A little flash poaching doesn't hurt. -Lee Trumpore
Justin Leov finds the grip with the big wheels. -Sven Martin
Nico Vouilloz is back with much better form than last year, when he was riddled with injury. 6th place and a good confidence booster for the season. Stage 3, Rocky Horror. -Sven Martin
Alien vs Gorilla. Nico not very impressed with my "light beer" but happy with the advice I gave him earlier in the week. -Sven Martin
Well done, @endurojc! -Sven Martin

Next time you steal a photo or video from any MTB media and upload it to your bullshit Facebook page, this guy comes after you. -Sven Martin
THANK YOU GOOD NIIIGGGGHHHHTTTT!!! Kia Ora. -Sven Martin
Part of the thrill of EWS racing is where it takes you, the new places and cultures you get to experience. Thanks Rotorua for being such a great host. -Sven Martin // Vital can't thank Sven Martin, Joe Bowman, @maddogboris Lee Trumpore and Zach Faulkner enough for their coverage this weekend. True legends! -gordo

Description
60km of riding, 7 hours on the bike, 40-minutes of timed racing over 7 Stages all in a single day. The opening round of the Enduro World Series in Rotorua, New Zealand was a battle for the ages. While the local tech and twisty trails were tough enough, the training sessions turned difficult sections into near-impossible, dirt-free, rooted hazards. Staying up was just as important as going fast. When the last rider crossed the line, Jerome Clementz and Anne-Caroline Chausson emerged victories, but by the slimmest of margins.

Sven Martin, Joe Bowman, Lee Trumpore, @maddogboris and @Zach Faulkner bring you the race day report from the fern-lined trenches.
