ANGEL FIRE RESORT, NM – September 29, 2012 – As the thick fog cleared from the base of the resort, 91 fierce competitors were unleashed to take on the grueling challenge of the Red Bull Final Descent. The 12-hour test of man and machine dealt riders with taxing terrain and unpredictable weather. The competition was forced to delay midway through due to lightning storms, but the riders eagerly got back to the race when mountain officials deemed the weather safe to ride again.
In the end, Chris Boice from Albuquerque, NM took the Solo Men’s Pro Division with an amazing 28 laps completed. Kim Godfrey from Louisville, CO, finished 25 laps to take home the victory in the Solo Female Pro Division. Other category winners were:
Solo Men’s Expert – Jesse Taysom - 26 Laps
Solo Women’s Expert – Terah Blake – 23 Laps
Duo Pro – Mojo Wheels – 28 Laps
Duo Expert – The Panty Droppers – 27 Laps
Team Division – BAMF – 26 Laps
“That two hour break (due to lightning) may have helped with fatigue a little, and the rain from yesterday made for an amazing course all day,” said Men’s Pro Solo Winner Chris Bois. “It was a tough win, but one of the best races we have competed in.” said Men’s Expert Duo Winner Lukas Weber.
Red Bull Final Descent is the reincarnation of “The Burner,” a 12-hour endurance race held in past years at Angel Fire Resort. The format of the event is simple—riders descend multiple trails down the mountain for 12 straight hours. In the end, the finisher in each category with the most laps wins. This race was the last stop in a 3 part endurance series across Wyoming and Colorado.
The overall series winners in each category were as follows:
Solo Men’s Pro – Waylon Smith
Solo Women’s Pro – Kim Godfrey
Solo Men’s Expert – Spencer Barnes
Solo Women’s Expert – Lori Odrioscoll
Duo Pro – Mojo Wheels
Team Division – East Fork Bikes
