WORLD CHAMPS RESULTS: Stevie Smith and Rachel Atherton Win Elite Downhill Seeding - Enduro Bikes Rule the Day! 24

Now less than 24 hours from the time that the 2014 World Champions will be crowned, Elite seeding results are in and they tell a very interesting story. Steve Smith and Rachel Atherton are on top, with a 2.208 and 16.802 second gap over 2nd place finishers Mitch Ropelato and Tracey Hannah, respectively. Overnight rain slowed things down a little bit since the Juniors ran the course.

What's wild about the results? Stevie Smith is on top riding his custom 650B Devinci with 165mm of travel and a lowered BoXXer up front. Check out how Mitch Ropelato and Jared Graves faired, slotting in at 2nd and 7th place. Also ON ENDURO BIKES. Check out Mitch's Specialized Enduro 29 here and Graves's Yeti SB66c here. Only a handful of riders were able to come close to their times on the 2nd split. Needless to say, finals are going to be wild! Aaron Gwin will be the first rider to drop in tomorrow after coming in last due to a flat tire.

Rachel absolutely murdered the Women's field. The other ladies are going to need to find some rocket power to keep up tomorrow.

If you haven't already done so, now is the time to get your Vital OTB bets in. There's a RockShox BoXXer WC and Vivid Rear Shock up for grabs to the person who has the closest race winner prediction!

Definitely makes sense the guys on enduro bikes are on top in "seeding". Basically this is a more formal timed practice. Know for a fact that nobody killed themselves pedaling hard on the mid-lower part of the course, and obviously in that state of mind, rolling around on a 29er or 650b will give you an edge... Come sunday though, the real power would be laid down... And then you will see a lot of the top guys on DH bikes and 26ers on the top 5-10... Stevie's bike though makes real sense there... Full DH bike geometry and suspension design, on a smaller travel package...

I think if Graves just pins it a little bit more in the techy sections he could get up to the top five. I understand that's a tall order, but he can do it. I happy to see Smith and Gee in the top!

I'm glad to see Tracy Hannah back, at least near, the top after all of her injuries. Go Tracy.

Ropelato did the same thing at the Fontana ProGRT race, killing it on a 29er. Not exactly uncharted territory, but worth a second look. Fontana and PMB are both pedal tracks, maybe the right weapon will make the difference. Why take a gun to a knife fight?

this is fully awesome. As much as I generally want a big bike to win a DH World Champs, I would be so stoked for Mitch to spank everyone on a 29er

Mitch's result is all Specialized needed to come up with a 29er Demo for next year.
I've got my money on this one.

Whoa!! Going to be weird seeing Gwin and Hill come down so early. Really hope they aren't injured. Mitch you are a freaking lunatic!!

UCI still calls it seeding even though it's just timed training.. Gwin and Hill will be coming down in their UCI ranking order for finals. 14th and 4th from the end I believe.

    Go Mitch!!!

I hope you're right... the article says "Aaron Gwin will be the first rider to drop in tomorrow, coming in last during seeding." What's the word Vital?

Are you sure? Timed timing is used as starting order for Worlds and there is no need to worry about top 20 being protected, as all of the riders qualify

I meant timed training, not timed timing lol

    seeding/qualifying/practice/whatever. here's tomorrow's start list: http://www.uci.ch/templates/BUILTIN-NOFRAMES/Template1/layout.asp?MenuId=MTY5MTc&LangId=1

looks like they are in fact starting based on rankings

Gravesy the machine was 21st at the first split, then deployed calves.

Hill and Gwinny second last and last place respectively. Interestingly, Sam was third fastest through the speed trap. Ooooh I sense sneaky tactics are afoot.
