The steepest, gnarliest track of the World Cup downhill season is making for great racing as qualifying took place today in Andorra. Sam Hill (Team CRC Nukeproof) returned to form in the Elite Men's class, Manon Carpenter (Saracen) edged out the dominating Rachel Atherton (GT Factory Racing) by 3-seconds and Michael Jones was fastest in the Junior Men's class.
Sam Hill with a 4:20.66 was just .046 ahead of 2nd place Greg Minnaar (Santa Cruz Syndicate) with season-dominating Gee Atherton (GT Factory Racing) in 3rd place, just 1.344 back. Last year's World Cup overall winner, Aaron Gwin (Specialized Racing) had a less-than-stellar result some 20-seconds off the pace, while fellow American, Neko Mulally (Trek World Racing) put up a stellar top 10 time just behind Brendan Fairclough (GSTAAAD Scott) who finished 9th. Brook MacDonald (Trek World Racing) shows up as a DNF. He's had shoulder troubles and possibly only rolled out of the start gate to guarantee a race spot on Sunday with his protected Top 20 status.
