2011 Leogang World Cup DH Finals Results
The day started cloudy and overcast, but by the time the top Men's qualifiers started the sun was out in full force. Even with the good weather, times were still generally slower than qualifiers.
Men:
Once the Top 20 riders took to the course, the Men's race got very exciting. 15th place qualifier Sam Hill led the pack for 10 riders, and for a while no one got close to his time. Danny Hart nearly beat Hill, but it was Greg Minnaar who made the first really big time improvement at 3.5+ seconds faster than Hill. Gee Atherton then put on a clinic for everyone, showing how to ride fast and consistent as he put another 3.6 seconds into Minnaar. First place qualifier Aaron Gwin didn't disappoint though. He was 1.7 seconds up at the first split and continued to put time into Gee throughout the rest of the course. Even with a minor bobble and loss of both pedals for a moment, Gwin captured the win by an astonishing 2.1 seconds.
Interesting to note - there was nearly 10 seconds between 1st and 5th today...
Going into the next round, Gwin now leads the overall point race at 628 points. Minnaar and Atherton aren't far behind though, at 582 and 527 points respectively.
Yeti/Fox racer Eliot Jackson also deserves a special shout-out. He was on an incredible run but crashed just after the second split and was unable to finish. Based on his split times, Jackson was on pace for an 11th place finish and would have held the hot seat for more than 45 riders had he been able to keep it upright.

Women:
Half way through the Women's field, Myriam Nicole really turned up the heat by coming down 11+ seconds better than those that went before her. A few riders later, Jill Kintner set the fastest top spilt of the day, but she crashed on an upper section which put her out of contention. Following Kintner, Tracy Moseley came down at a blistering pace and set the pace for the remaining riders at 7+ seconds faster than Nicole. Rachel Atherton was able to edge Tracy out by a tenth of a second, but the last rider and first place qualifier Floriane Pugin put in a huge effort and cruised down over 2.5 seconds faster, securing her first ever World Cup win.

Wow, you know you are getting old when there are only a handful of riders with '70's birthdays....Peaty could have drove Hart's parents to the hospital for his birth....LOL. Cedric could have podiumed if he would keep the bike on the ground and keep some of the style in check!

This is turning into a legendary season! Watching Gwin sort of reminds me of Hill from a couple of seasons ago...looking deceptively easy but putting huge amounts of time into everybody....nice style too. Super stoked for CG, way to go, 7th and with da steez...

Amazing race! CG may have finished out of the top five but he was easily #1 on style!!! Incredible run by Gwin. A little disappointed to see minimal coverage on Stevie Smith? The guy beats out most of the top contenders even with a bobble or two in his run and next to no mention... Great coverage by Freecaster overall though! So awesome to watch this online!
