I haven't ridden street in a while, but when I did I rode Manitou forks. They're the easiest to modify for street use. All of the springs and damper shafts are, or at least were, interchangeable between different models of forks. You can get a burly chassis with 20mm dropouts, then put in stiff springs and shorter travel dampers from an XC fork. It's also pretty easy to mess with the shim stacks to get firmer compression.

Like big bird said manitou has some great forks at good prices but not much can compare to foxes lightweight and stiffness, rockshox new pike DJ is pretty good along with the argyle rct, haven't spent anytime on marzocchi but they are out of business so keep that in mind for replacement parts
