14 minutes of top-to-bottom Whistler abuse ain't nothin' to scoff at. Justin Leov swoops Chris Kovarik and Sam Hill for the win in one of the most legitimate downhill races of the season.
The short tracks are good for T.V thats about it really but i have noticed coverage has slipped up this season with huge parts of the tracks not covered by a single camera...imagine every round being 14 mins long you'd miss 99% of the run which IMO would suck worse than a dyson...next year with only six rounds could be interesting for the UCI i agree with sven than more obscure and off the radar races will suddenly appear for the pros to dabble in
The argument for short courses for TV etc is a moot point. This year with less Nissan money there have been less cameras. Often footage is fudged combining quali and race runs together. As it is even short courses have been poorly documented properly. So why not make one event long and rough, we need a good mix, it is afterall a series testing all aspects of DH bike riding. With only 6 rounds next year i can see a few more specialty non UCI races popping on to peoples radar....
To the guy who made the first comment:
This is an interesting idea but I don't think it would be quite possible. With the way that publicity is starting to build up around downhill, the UCI needs to carry on to make our sport as spectator and media friendly as possible, and this doesn't really aid in doing so. it would be a nightmare trying to broadcast the race and wouldn't have the same atmosphere with crouds being so much more spread out. Just my oppinion though.
In other news, WAY TO GO JUZZO!!!! repping it for the kiwis!!!
IMO, this is where World Cup DH'ing should be moving towards. The 2-4 minute races of the past decade are getting a bit old. I think it would also allow more/different people to move into the pro ranks with this type of format and push out some of the guys who haven't been able to produce a WC podium their entire career. Time to shake things up.
