2011 Highland S'Ender Bash and Video Contest
by Ryan Thibault
"TOGA, TOGA, TOGA!!!"
It is official. On Highland's closing day, November 12th 2011, we tore the flippin' roof off lodge!

The Highland crew outdid themselves again with the most uproarious S'ender Bash ever. The lodge was packed and punk rock blared through the p.a. system. Hands went up, beers went down, and the entire crowd rocked for several hours.

This year's Bash was a theme party revolving around the movie Animal House, replete with laurel wreaths and togas, "College" sweatshirts, and theme songs. Maybe it was the outfits, maybe it was the thrilling videos in the contest, but the crowd took on a crazed pitch.
The Vital MTB video contest kicked the evening off with a screening of the top five clips as voted on by you the public. This year the competition was stiff and over 50 entries were submitted. Deafening cheers shook the house as Highland's toga clad owner Mark Hayes handed out prizes, including $500 to first place winner Sam Oakes for his film Joe Young - Time for a Change.

Final Results:
1st - Joe Young -Time for a Change - 179 votes
2nd - Day Late Dollar Short - 173 votes

3rd - Push To Turn - 167 votes
4th - GR's Kickstart My Heart - 112 votes
5th - Skyline Media Summer Showreel 2011 - 81 votes
George Ryan took home the unofficial award of crowd favorite. After his warm reception George took it upon himself to lead charge to the dance floor and Highland's first ever full blown mosh pit ensued. Before our punk rock brethren the CopOuts could finish their first set the evening had ramped up to a contagious mania.

Over and out! It was a great 2011 season and we're looking to go bigger and better next year! Thanks to everyone for making Highland Mountain Bike Park awesome.

in the past we have done a "in house" vote with people cheering... loudest cheer wins

Noah, are you saying that kickstart my heart really deserved 4th place?

Party on, Highland!
mtbx3, it wasn't a condition of the contest that the videos had to be of Highland. They just had to be season enders.

the joe young video won, BS btw... it was all online, not hard to set up a few proxy's and vote for the same video 100 times... he wasn't even there, he was in the UK

I liked #3. Those trails look amazing. Was that Highland? And I felt the fun right through the screen.

@Scott - I just watched the Sam Oakes vid and it was pretty dope. Seems like a voting system has more legitimacy than a judged one. Afterall, it's not a "film fest" it's a contest.

Looked like an amazing time but if next year's contest is going to be decided on "popular vote" then I won't bother entering. It doesn't matter how good your video is, it's a matter of how many votes you can horde from friends it seems. Get some actual judges who know what a good video constitutes then it'd have more legitimacy... and get rid of the voting system, please.
