I just bought a 'new' bike. It's 2 years old but in great condition. That about as good as it gets for me (and I assume many others) who have a budget.

On obvious thing that stands out is how much the stem length changes along with the height. Basically with this stem low also means ridiculously long.

I agree with Fireant. Yes, part of this blame lies with Red Bull. They're going to be the largest martyr. They're the main sponsor who likely kept this event alive. Another part of the blame has to go to the riders' sponsors. I'm certain they're pushing...more

I think you are spot on about the misplaced anger. I keep seeing people say that riders are risking their lives for Redbull, but that's ridiculous that anyone would do that or ride for the benefit of a sponsor that isn't paying them. I agree that riders should be fairly compensated and provided adequate insurance but it's the riders individual sponsors that they are riding for and representing out there and who gains the most from what they do. Some of the top competitors like Zink, Aggy, and Sorge are out there wearing the logos of Redbull's main competition. If there is any corporate sponsor pressure on these guys it's going to come from thier own individual sponsors not Redbull. It's these companies that people should be looking to direct thier anger at.

The likely issue is that outside of maybe Rampage, most contests are not very profitable. At the end of the day I don't think many events or contests produce much revenue to share with the riders anyway.

I've seen the suggestion alot that Redbull provide event insurance for all of the riders. While that sounds good in theory I'm not sure that something like that is possible while also keeping the event the way it is now, with the riders having such freedom to build and ride whatever they want. As soon as one party (wether it be Redbull itself or whatever insurance carrier) assumes responsibility for the entire event the door opens for all types of new safety regulations/restrictions on what riders can do. I mean put yourself in the shoes of Redbull or the insurance company. Are they going to be ok with guys hucking themselves off 50ft cliffs with unfinished landings (Vink)? 80ft canyon gaps upside down? All while most guys are wearing minimal padding and no body armor? The only way to allow these guys complete freedom to ride the lines they want too, the way they want too ride them (which is what Rampage is all about) is to have them be responsible for themselves. It can't really work any other way. Otherwise you would have people from Redbull or some insurance company stepping and and deciding what amount of risk is too much or what lines riders can and cannot ride.

Is there really much of a downside to this on a slopestyle bike? I know that hydraulic brakes are better than cables but are the brakes really used that much on a slope bike? Is not DH where you need to keep a big 35lb bike under control on some steep steep and gnarly terrain. I would think in slope it mostly just quick speed checks here and there correct? Those avid mechanicals seem like they would handle that just fine.

Yea on those trail, considering the way these guy normally ride, that didn't look fun at all. I get the fat bike thing for riding in alternate conditions like snow or mud or sandy terrain. But not on regular dry trails.

I'm not really sure what your talking about with regards to. 'One trick' winners recently. That may have been the case back in 2010 with Zzinks 360 of the oakley drop but it certainly wasn't the case the past two years. The only trick strait did last year was the no hander if the big drop. He won because he took a big steep like, hit the biggest drop, and did it completely smooth. Not because of one trick.

Same for Sorge the year before. He did do any tricks until the bottom sections where he threw a superman and a backflip. He too won mainly because he road a gnarly line and did it smooth and fast.

After watching this slideshow I can't help but question why so many people get their panties in a bunch over the wooden features. All I see is people talking about "natural" this or "natural" that when they complain about the wood features. But can someone then explain to me what is "natural" about some of the things I saw on the slideshow? I mean look at slide #5, or #34. In #34 that gap that (I am assuming) Fairclough built. That's natural? Why because its made of dirt and rocks? When you spend days piling up rocks and dirt to build a massive takeoff and landing that otherwise did not exist prior, I'm sorry but there is nothing 'natural' about that. And Slide #5? This are perfectly sculpted lips and takeoffs. Does that mean I can claim I'm riding 'natural' terrain next time I hit the jump line at my local bike park?

Don't take this rant as a knock on whats going on here, I love it. I'm just saying its a bit hypocritical to shart all over the wood features because they aren't natural but then be ok with these other features just because they are made of dirt and rocks.

I'm not sure how you could say that its been "one trick rampage wins". You clearly did not pay attention to the contest the past 2 years. Re-watch Kurt Sorge from 2 years ago, he barely did any tricks. He threw a superman and a backflip down the bottom section, thats it. And Strait last year? His no hander off the big drop was the only trick he threw. Both of those guys won because they hit big lines and hit them smooth and clean. Nothing to do with tricks.
