I'm not really sure what your talking about with regards to. 'One trick' winners recently. That may have been the case back in 2010 with Zzinks 360 of the oakley drop but it certainly wasn't the case the past two years. The only trick strait did last year was the no hander if the big drop. He won because he took a big steep like, hit the biggest drop, and did it completely smooth. Not because of one trick.

Same for Sorge the year before. He did do any tricks until the bottom sections where he threw a superman and a backflip. He too won mainly because he road a gnarly line and did it smooth and fast.

After watching this slideshow I can't help but question why so many people get their panties in a bunch over the wooden features. All I see is people talking about "natural" this or "natural" that when they complain about the wood features. But can someone then explain to me what is "natural" about some of the things I saw on the slideshow? I mean look at slide #5, or #34. In #34 that gap that (I am assuming) Fairclough built. That's natural? Why because its made of dirt and rocks? When you spend days piling up rocks and dirt to build a massive takeoff and landing that otherwise did not exist prior, I'm sorry but there is nothing 'natural' about that. And Slide #5? This are perfectly sculpted lips and takeoffs. Does that mean I can claim I'm riding 'natural' terrain next time I hit the jump line at my local bike park?

Don't take this rant as a knock on whats going on here, I love it. I'm just saying its a bit hypocritical to shart all over the wood features because they aren't natural but then be ok with these other features just because they are made of dirt and rocks.

I'm not sure how you could say that its been "one trick rampage wins". You clearly did not pay attention to the contest the past 2 years. Re-watch Kurt Sorge from 2 years ago, he barely did any tricks. He threw a superman and a backflip down the bottom section, thats it. And Strait last year? His no hander off the big drop was the only trick he threw. Both of those guys won because they hit big lines and hit them smooth and clean. Nothing to do with tricks.

I don't mind some wooden features as long as its within reason. Its easy to say to just leave all the wood out but I can see where its beneficial. A well placed wood feature (where dirt may not possible) could connect two areas or potential lines that might not be possible without it.

Its cool to see some top teams already signed on for this. I was a bit skeptical it would draw any big names.

Not actual bike parts, but I think bike related tools can often be wildly overpriced.

I've also made one of these PVC ones and it work great. You can take the basic plans on that site and modify them to you needs. I made one for 5 bikes in my garage and it works great. The material was in expensive and took only a couple hours to cut ... more »

"having times so close made watching that much more nerve-racking".... I agree with that, but for me there is also a downside to these type of courses in that there are very few places to makes up time. While there is added excitement when the times are close, it also makes the race as a whole less exciting because in the end there are only a couple of key parts of the track. Watching, you knew the entire races boiled down to how the racers handled 1) that one rocky turn section where Smith and Gee screwed up, or 2) the 'stairway' section where Bruni screwed up. Outside of that, the track was boring from a spectators perspective. There just doesn't seem to be a lot challenging these guys. It was edge of your seat action as each guy came to the line but that's about it. I'd rather be on the edge of my seat for the majority of each run.

Added reply in a thread What Do You Enjoy in Mountain Biking Besides Mountain Biking? 6/2/2014 2:59 PM

Shopping for parts of course..... but after that is working on and maintaining my bikes. Long before I ever started mountain biking I always had a thing for taking things apart, seeing how they work, and putting them back together. Its no different now ... more »

Yea same place. Mountain Creek just took over the operations themselves a few years ago. They've made a lot of improvements since.

Exactly, I've had my eye on one of those 40T options since I have an X9 short cage and don't want to buy a new one. I think the X9 short has a capacity of 30T so it should work with the 11-36 I'm currently running.

Sure, if you need the real wide spread of gears then you will need the multiple rings up front. My point was really that with these wide range rear cogs, it provides enough of a range that many riders can get by with. So if the choice is a 1x or a multi ring set up and front mech, for those who can get by with the single ring, its without question the way to go.

Its just way more efficient. The front derailleur worked fine but getting a similar gearing range with one ring up front is just better. Its one less part to maintain or that can break while riding. You get rid of the whole mech and the extra shifter and cable cluttering your bars, its more simple to use not having to worry about what 'combination' you are in and just having one set of gears up and down, its very very very quiet when run with a clutch derailleur.....

The list of benefits is endless.

Why was there an issue with the short cage but not with the medium in terms of clearing the big cog? Why did it matter? I thought that the derailleur body and upper pulley were all the same regardless of cage length. Wouldn't the longer cage only eat of more of the chain slack?

I doubt it. From whats been reported so far, its going to be muddy no matter what the weather does from here on out. On top of that, I saw a video where one of the rider, I think it was Gee, said that the track is actually better when its raining since the rain washes alot of the mud build up off the roots and rocks.

The benefits of the PMB bikes are for the long pedal sections. Although this course looks pretty smooth, it doesn't seem all that pedally outside that short part at the end. So the shorter travel bikes probably won't provide much benefit. If there isn't alot of pedaling, a DH bike will always be the fastest, regardless of how smooth it is.
