Team Oliver Racing - Season Update
Team Oliver Racing / Banshee Bikes
-POC Eastern States Cup #1 at Mountain Creek Bike Park, Vernon NJ-
Oliver Racing launched the 2012 racing season at Mountain Creek Bike Park in Vernon New Jersey for the second stop of the Pro GRT Circuit and the first race of the POC Eastern States Cup.
A warm and dry weekend paved the way for a fast race course. Andrew Slowey, Jon Lamb, Mike Oliver and Scott Bureau were in attendance. Andrew lead the team with the quickest time down the mountain in his race run including a gnarly crash in the infamous beer spewing rock garden. Mike, who had injured his foot in practice held on to 7th of 25 in the Cat II division. Jon new to the team had his cleanest run of the day in final run. Scott showed up Sunday after a wedding to get a half run thought the race course before flatting, Scott not having seen half the course took a conservative run and racked up a few points for the series.
-POC Eastern States Cup #2 at Plattekill Mt, Roxbury NY-
The next stop for Oliver Racing began the Friday following the POC ESC at Mountain Creek. Jon and Scott headed up to Plattekill Mt early to get a good pit spot and get a few extra practice runs in. Sunny skies and warm weather made for an excellent weekend of practice and racing! Richard Patty and Andrew Slowey arrived Friday evening with Brandon Sbordone arriving Saturday morning to join Scott and Jon. Jon Lamb has come onto the Oliver Racing squad as its newest member, racing in the cat2 category with teammate Mike Oliver.
Plattekill usually splits the race courses, one for the cat2 and cat3 racers, and the other for the cat1 and pro racers. Plattekill is famous for its rocky, root infested, shale covered trails and the race course didn't disappoint. Plattekill used their Steve Porraro Memorial Track which was steep, fast and technical, Scott was overhead saying the course was just hard and gnarly enough to be challenging but completely exciting because it made him ride out of his comfort zone and push himself to ride on his edge. Andrew, Richard, Scott and Brandon all raced the cat1 category. Andrew finished in 12th, Richard finished in 16th, Scott finished in 23rd, and Brandon took up the 25th spot out of 32 riders in total. Jon was unable to put together a clean run, catching his foot on a stump causing him to crash and putting his bike into disrepair - not wanting to put his bike under further pain he opted to take a DNF and walked down. Ending the weekend in the sun with a cold Wachusett beer in hand was a great way to wrap up a fun weekend in the Catskills.
-POC Eastern States Cup #3 at Attitash Mt, Attitash NH-
If you don't like the weather in New England wait a minute, what a difference a week makes - the weather at Attitash for the third stop of the POC ESC race was no exception. The warm sunny weather from Plattekill was nowhere to be seen. The sun and warm weather from the weekend before was replaced with pouring rain and cold days up in New Hampshire. If mother-nature is gonna bring on the mud - us racers will bring out the mud spikes and tear offs!! Oliver Racing's Andrew Slowey was excited for the weekend and always says, "Mud is the great equalizer." Scott, Mike, Andrew, Jon, and Richard were all in attendance for a weekend of foggy goggles and wet shoes! It rained all day Saturday, through the night, and into the morning. The clouds held out till race time when it began to sprinkle. The course was a fun one with a little bit of everything, rocks, roots, chutes, switchbacks, tight trees, long access road sprints, berms and soft loam! After a day of practice on Saturday the loam was gone and with help from the rain everything had turned into mud. By Sunday morning the course was a babbling brook that ran right down the whole course right through the main line. Even all this mud, and rain couldn't stop Andrew. He was on point, he was ready, his bike was dialed, he spun on the trainer, and above all he was loving the mud! Put some mud spikes on his bike, hand him some tear offs and he starts smiling.
Race time came, Mike and Jon were first off to head up and Andrew, Richard, and Scott started getting ready eagerly awaiting the arrival of Mike and Jon back at the finish line. Mike came down grinning from ear to ear ranting about his race run and how he "killed it" - resulting in a time of 3:29:21 putting him on the podium box in 3rd place for the cat2 class. Following Mike came Jon with a 3:37.30 putting him into 11th place in the cat2 class.
Excited from Mikes energy Andrew, Richard and Scott hopped on the lift and headed up to the start gate. Richard was the first to drop in followed by Andrew and then Scott. Andrew ended up having the run he has been looking for all season - with a 3:11.11 he won the Cat1 19-29 class by 10.92 seconds over second place, which would have put him into 7th place in the pro class (expect big things from "Slowee" this season - don't say we didn't warn you) Richard finished in 5th with a time for 3:27.01 and Scott came in 7th with a 3:38.72. After a quick wet and rainy pack up we were back on the road headed south for home.
