How about our boy Neko Mullaly in 7th - best effort of his career, only 2.7 seconds off the pace! Crush it Neko! Happy to see Gwin shut everyone up, at least partially.

No kidding. Talk about conquering demons. That takes quite a bit of personal fortitude to face something like that down, and if you ask me, it's one of the most amazing things - the personal effort and the results it yields - irrespective of the sport itself. You really have to raise yourself to a certain level of focus - or state of being - or whatever you want to call it - to overcome something like that. MTB provides pretty cool circumstances for it though.

Only time will tell, but I'm predicting Gee to be higher up - he's still top form. I also thing Gwin is ready to rage on the WC scene again. He's been sprinting hard at Fontana from the looks of it, and it also sounds like he's been taking training much more seriously this off-season (last year he didn't race once). I think with the limelight off of him and some time to get his act together, he's going to be showing us the form from 2011 and 2012.

Gee was clearly fastest through that rooty section with the big rock and then that little wooden bridge jump looking thing after. Dayum.

Actually that can't be right - written rules can't be superceded ad hoc at a rider meeting. Guidance can be given, but to be able to re-write the rules at a meeting, with no procedure, would be unfair, confusing and chaotic. You can't change the rules in the middle of the game. It's like an agency making up new rules without following proper procedures, or the police enforcing a law that hasn't been properly passed by the legislature. But you can inform riders how the existing written rules will be interpreted and enforced in a given set of circumstances at a particualr venue in light of venue-specific issues. That's where Barrel blew it - skipping the rider meeting.

The rule is somewhat ambiguous as written, unless there is some other definition or guidance elsewhere in the rules. The first sentance is clear - no outside assistance, period. It does not differentiate between practice or race, which means it arguably applies to both. But then the reference to support "during the race" is a bit confusing - it should say "at any time" - not "during the race" because the latter makes it sounds like it's ok if it is NOT during the race. They should have had a good attorney review the rules for ambiguities and vagueness. However, if during the rider meeting the course master clearly stated no shuttling, that is a pretty good indication as to how the rule is being interpreted and enforced by the governing body. It's hard to understand why Fab shuttled, assuming he did, in light of this. I hate the "oh will YOU did this" fingerpointing. Establish some clear fcking rules and follow them!

Seriously! No rough tracks/trails in the US?!? Are you fucking kidding me? That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Maybe not in January, but in the spring, there is, um, Windham? MSA a few hours north in Canada? Whistler? Trestle in CO? Mt Snow? Angelfire? Oregon? Platty? I don't know, I call BS. The bottom line is they thought the medium was right, but they were wrong, and they should have done more due diligence
