Bas and Olsen are apples and oranges. Olsen was not on TV. There were never any false statements made about his condition. It was a freak accident that could technically happen to any MTB rider potentially on any given ride on any given trail. The issues at hand with Rampage:
- riders might feel pressured to compete in high wind scenarios due to limited event time and TV format
- rider's safety is less of a concern than it could be, big picture
- build teams and riders are not fairly compensated / cared after compared to what RB gets out of the content creation they get to own on the backs of the guys risking it all.

I'm elated that Paul is walking under his own power, and elated that we have actually managed to move the needle.

BT, props! Keep up the good work.

Zink, your courage on the advocacy / ambassador side is just as impressive as your courage on the trail. Good luck with the union. If there is anything we can do to help, please say so. I would like to offer whatever resources I can, if there is a way you need help in terms of outside assistance. email: mike at spokeapparel.com

Red Bull - Thanks. Good work on the response (so far). We will be keeping this conversation alive so we look forward to continued progress.

Good things!

Awesome to see Paul sitting up.

BT's article covers a ton of arguable topics. Respectfully, the majority of the comments do not address what insiders seem to know (either factually or instinctively). You aren't going to see a publication run with an opinion piece like this unless something seriously stinks. And you aren't going to see an ambassador like Zink throw a major event brand under the buss unless something is foul. Whatever caused this article (and Zink's call-out) is greater than insurance coverage, greater than someone getting "hurt" in a contest where they knowingly assumed the risk, and greater than prize money.

The only reason I am inserting myself into this conversation is because I believe in these two guys. I know what they are doing is coming from a place of actionable concern. Something's gotta change and it seems that someone may have let something happen that should not have happened. This should concern spectators, athletes and sponsors alike. Of course, I could be wrong. But I don't think I am. Read between the lines guys.

Agreed with @sspomer - there is limited space to build, and I've judged similar competition formats once upon a time in the big mountain freeskiing realm... My thoughts:
If you built it, you should know every inch of it better than someone 'poaching' it, thus you have no...more

Hey Brandon,
Where does the FMB stand in all this? They are the governing body of the FMB world tour which rampage is a part of and I haven't seen them do anything for any of the riders. They have nothing about concussions in their rule book. Also, what...more

Not in Paul's case. He broke his T12 by what appears to be a super slam to his tail bone area. Watch his run again.

Unions are only viable when the workers (or athletes) are so badly needed that, without their participation, someone's pockets will be hit hard and hit fast. There simply isn't enough money, or unity (yet), in MTB for the athletes to be able to muscle the venues and sponsors. On top of that, there's just too much decentralization in the way things work right now....but I agree that a rider's union would be the jam to see happen.

"....horrible people spreading false news that he was ok..."

This is where the whole event falls apart for me. If these implications are true, this is far worse than low prize purses, imminent bodily harm, insurance, and uncompensated diggers. If Redbull employees were spreading false reports on Paul's condition in an effort to keep the event rolling, keep riders feeling fearless, and to keep the public in the dark, something very evil has occurred: a media giant has just used us all. If this is true, this is corporate greed at its finest and sickest hour. These actions would warrant the #fuckrampage hashtag for absolute certain.

I know one thing for sure: Cam Zink is a man of integrity. He only speaks out like this when actions are morally / professionally reprehensible. Cam, the most powerful part of Brandon's story lies within the image caption above. We hope you will find the courage or stage to tell what you know if what you know is as bad as we think it is. Know that if it is, this entire community will support you and every rider. No event, brand, or prize is worth a conspiracy of this nature.

Heal up Paul. Heal up T Mack and everyone else injured. Thanks BT for writing this and thanks Zink for the insight you've provided so far.

aye. cameras are always on him anyway and he's always pushing it. crazy what the racers have to do to win. hope he was ok. i know he ran the next day but it certainly does look like he was concussed. gives me the shivers to think about riding immediately afterward.
