My name is Peter Haile and I am searching for a Graduate Assistant to help guide my team here at Union College in South Eastern Kentucky. This person would have to have a bachelors degree and want to pursue a masters in education or psychology.

The fat teeth of the chainring align with the one-half of the link that has outer plates and the skinny teeth of the chainring align with the portion of the link with the inner plates. I think in concert with the clutch rear derailleur one won't need a chainguide. I would submit they've been riding that very bike as we see it.
The widened "skiptooth" portion of the chainring is only where the cranks are horizontal, not coincidentally where one spends the vast majority of time descending.
Its a bit of brilliance. Sign me up.
Any comments on why the derailleur moves horizontal?

Snow is part of life. Truth hurts, beauty heals. The truth is mountain biking is more arduous in the snow, but the beauty and stillness that come in winter are vital in our lives. I love snow.

This is a good tip!
The point of the tip is not to keep the chain or upper derailleur pulley out of the spokes, as some of the comments would lead you to believe. This is valuable for the lower pulley and cage of your derailleur interacting with the spokes when either your derailleur or wheel gets out of sorts.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
