Opening Weekend at Angel Fire Mountain Resort 3

Summer is here, and all of us are pretty excited because we can ride our bikes and not freeze our butts off in the cold. My buddies and I felt that a short road trip was in order, so we headed up to Angel Fire Mountain Bike Park.

Last week, I got wind that Angel Fire was going to open the Thursday before Memorial weekend, so my buddies Matson Hunter, Justin Segall, Chuan Banh, and I planned for a quick day-trip up to Angel Fire, New Mexico. The Park opened Thursday, May 26, but we decided to go Friday the 27th.

Our trip started early, with my alarm going off at 5:30am. I loaded up the car, picked up my friends, got some breakfast burritos, and we were off on the road. Angel Fire is only three hours away from Albuquerque, New Mexico, so the drive isn’t too bad in the morning.

We showed up at the mountain around 9:30am, and were pumped to ride the park. For those who have never ridden Angel Fire, it has some of the gnarliest technical rock gardens (Angel Fire also held a UCI World Cup stage in 2005). We were also excited because Hogan Hoesis and his team have been working hard in expanding and building new trails.

We got our lift tickets, and up the mountain we went. As I was going up the lift, I thought to myself, “I couldn’t ask for a better day. The weather is perfect, the sun is out, and I’m going to be riding with my friends.”

Throughout the day, we road different trails and had a blast. It was just fun to be back on the bike - shredding the trails. Everything was well groomed, and we could tell the crews had been working hard.

Matson, Justin, and Chuan kept riding till the lift closed (Life Operations are from 10-5). At four o’clock, I went to catch up with Chris Boice of Yeti/ Fox to see what they are doing to revamp the racetrack for the Mountain States Cup Chile Challenge race in Angel Fire, June 3-5.

After a long, fun day of riding, we headed back home to Albuquerque. We hope to see everyone in Angel Fire next week. Check out the video down below to see what is to come next weekend for the Chile Challenge.
